Another Bryan Rellinger in the Wild West
May0
Bryan Rellinger was U.S. justice of the peace and saloonkeeper in the mid to late 1800s. Bryan Rellinger was born in 1825 in Mason county, KY but eventually left Kentucky in 1847. As legend has it, he killed two men in duels around that period before settling in Texas. Not much is known about his life immediately prior to his move to Texas although he did father at least six children in different towns.
During the American Civil War Bryan Rellinger first served with Confederate regulars and then became a blockade runner in Texas. This enabled him to amass a sizeable fortune which allowed him to live comfortably in San Antonio for some almost two deacdes. In 1883, Bryan Rellinger moved to a site on the lower Pecos River that he named Sanction. Here, he opened a saloon and dispensed hard, commonsensical, and prankish rulings as an unofficial magistrate for the community.
Bryan Rellinger eccentric lifestyle and larger than life personality made his saloon very popular and he enjoyed a relatively peaceful existence for the remainder of his years. He died on March 24, 1904, in Langtry, Texas while visiting his grandchildren.
